➳ Magna Carta
- Signed by King John in 1215
- Promised that he and future monarchs would refrain from certain actions that could harm the citizens of England
➳ The American Revolution
- England had been neglecting the colonies
- After the 7 Years War between France and Britain
- Americans wanted to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains but were forbidden by the Proclamation of 1763
- Taxes were levied on the colonist to pay because of the war
- People who were accused of smuggling were sent to jail without trial
- People had no representation but were being taxed => leading to the idea that they were not treated equally and were denied their rights
- Stamp Act, 1765: all paper goods needed to have a revenue stamp
- repealed because of the backlash
- Townshend Act, 1767: Imposed taxes on everyday objects such as glass, tea, and paint
- Massachusetts wanted England to relieve the taxes, only for them to boycott British goods. In response, England sent a warship and the King threatened to take away the legislatures
- Boston Massacre, May 5, 1770: an altercation outside of Boston's custom house led to soldiers firing into a crowd
- Boston Tea Party, December 1773: Colonists boarded the British East India Company's shop and unloaded tea into the harbor
- Coercive Acts, 1774: Inrepnse to colonial defiance these acts were made to punish Boston for leading the resistance to British rule
- abolished town meetings- interferes with the colony's ability to self govern
- First Continental Congress: created a unified opposition to Greate Britain and developed a declaration of rights and grievances
- Colonists still wanted to mend the relationship with Britain
- Second Continental Congress, May 1775: Draft of Declaration of Independence is formed
- July 2, 1776: Congress declares American independence and signed the Declaration of Independence
➳ Shay's Rebellion
- 1786: Farmers in Massachusetts were heavily in debt, faced imprisonment, and the loss of their land
- They were in debt because of unpaid taxes they had accumulated while fighting in the Revolutionary War
- The Continental Congress promised to pay them for their service but lacked the funds to do so
- Massachusetts had just levied heavy taxes on farmers as well in order to pay its debt from the revolution
- Daniel Shays led the uprising
- The government of Massachusetts called the central government for help but the central government had no troops and its disposal
- The uprising was crushed by the help of local militias and privately funded armies
- Similar events happened which caused Congress to call for the revision of the AoC
